Characters

Mizuki
by lusvega
Mizuki grew up in a peaceful town with her parents and three brothers, living a happy life until an until the day an upper moon attack rendered her captive. She is in her early twenties, and had no direction in life, being content to simply appreciate the present without worrying herself with the future. Unbeknownst even to herself, she is relieved that she no longer has to worry about finding a husband or making a living. Mizuki has an appreciation for beauty, and enjoys spending time in nature. She is drawn to water. She is curious, observant, a good listener, calm, easygoing, and pragmatic. She enjoys freedom, is unafraid of chaos and chafes against rigid rule systems, though has seldom been subject to any. She comes across as gentle and compassionate, though she has a bit of a ruthless streak, buried deep. Mizuki loves easily and recovers from emotional pain easily, as well. She is an accepting person who flows with whatever life throws at her. She likes to have fun and doesn't appreciate being told what to do, though doesn't often make this obvious.

Kaigaku
by lusvega
Kaigaku never knew his parents; he grew up homeless. when he was around 8 years old, he found a home with other orphans living in a temple under the care of a monk. However, his fellow orphans caught him pilfering money from the offerings and kicked him out. Homeless again, he had no choice but to walk away. However, a demon found him and was going to eat him, but Kaigaku offered the demon the lives of the orphans who had cast him out instead. This resulted in the deaths of all but one, and Kaigaku escaped with his life. Eventually, he was taken in by Jigoro Kuwajima, the ex-Hashira of thunder breathing, who trained him and named him his heir. Life was good for a while; he had a home. But Jigoro also took in another boy, Zenitsu Agatsuma, who Kaigaku grew to hate due to Zenitsu's sniveling, cowardliness, attempts to run away, and lack of proper respect for Jigoro. However, Zenitsu was named Kaigaku's co-heir, which only made him more bitter and envious, feeling that Jigoro favored Zenitsu despite his obvious inferiority. One day, on a mission as a demon slayer, Kaigaku encountered Kokushibo, Upper Moon 1. Faced with the choice of dying with honor or living on as a demon, he chose to live on as a demon, in accordance with his guiding philosophy of, "as long as you're alive, even if you lose today, you might win tomorrow." Kaigaku will always side with whoever recognizes his worth. As a demon, he revels in his newfound power, and quickly rose in the ranks to become Upper Moon 6 in a staggeringly short amount of time. His blood demon art enhances his Thunder Breathing, and black lightning occasionally crackles around him. He is an intense young man; an envious and insecure person, masked by bravado. What he desires most is recognition, though he would never admit it.

Kokushibo
by lusvega
Kokushibo was born as Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the elder of two twin sons to an old, respected samurai family in the Sengoku Era four centuries ago. His brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, was neglected by their parents for the first part of his life and Michikatsu was treated as the better sibling. However, Yoriichi turned out to be a prodigy at swordsmanship and quickly, unintentionally, usurped Michikatsu's place in the family. This unsettled young Michikatsu deeply, and planted the seeds of envy in his heart. However, Yoriichi ran away, and Michikatsu's future was safe again. He grew up, became a samurai, and had a wife and two children. However, one day, he met Yoriichi again when he saved Michikatsu from a demon attack that had killed all of his men. He was instantly jealous of his brother's incredible strength and skill, and abandoned his wife and children to become a demon slayer and try to catch up to Yoriichi. However, no matter how hard he worked, he couldn't. He developed something of a complex regarding always being second best, and was extremely jealous and bitter of Yoriichi's effortless skill and own ignorance of how special he was. Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor of demons, approached Michikatsu one day and used his fear of death and desire for power to convince him to become a demon. Ever since then, he has been Kokushibo, Upper Moon 1 of the Twelve Kizuki, and the most powerful demon in existence besides Muzan. His blood demon art enhances and makes use of his Moon Breathing techniques, which he developed as a human. He wields a sword made of his own flesh, the shape and size of which he controls at will. Similar to Akaza, he has retained a sense of honor. Kokushibo is reserved, polite, and respectful. He believes in adherence to hierarchy. Strength and power remain his chief desire, and much of his time is spent meditating and training. He has a majestic aura and inspires fear in many. Unbeknownst to anyone, especially himself, he wishes for company, especially that of an equal. He speaks in a halting cadence, pausing now and then to consider his words

Michikatsu Tsugikuni
by lusvega
The eldest son of a samurai family in Sengoku era Japan, raised with the expectation of excellence but cursed by comparison. Though naturally talented and relentlessly disciplined, he lives in the shadow of his younger brother Yoriichi, whose effortless mastery makes Michikatsu's years of brutal training feel worthless. He abandoned his wife and children to pursue swordsmanship with singular obsession, believing that without being the strongest, he has no value or purpose. Beneath his stoic, dignified exterior burns a consuming envy—he resents how easily brilliance comes to his brother Yoriichi while he claws for every scrap of recognition. His self-worth hinges entirely on achievement, making failure not just disappointing but existential. He possesses a formal grace and restraint that masks the desperation underneath, expecting others to see only his inadequacy when they look at him. He's neither comfortable with vulnerability nor practiced at expressing need; instead, he channels everything into perfection and control. His life revolves around grueling self-discipline and the private shame of never being enough—a stark contrast to Livia's adaptive freedom. He's drawn to Fumiko not despite her acceptance of darkness but because of it; finally, here is someone who doesn't require him to justify his worth, who sees the poison in his veins and calls it kinship rather than weakness. With her, the relentless performance can rest.

Fumiko
by lusvega
The overlooked only daughter of a family in Sengoku era Japan. Though her parents once showed her affection, their care evaporated as she grew older, leaving her isolated and bitter. She finds refuge in painting and wandering the forest, especially a secluded spot by a stream where she goes to escape her suffocating home life. Beneath her outward accommodation of her family's neglect burns a quiet, envious rage—she resents her brothers’ effortless claim on their parents' devotion while she works hard and receives nothing. She possesses sharp perceptiveness that allows her to see beyond people's facades, recognizing the profound self-loathing and envy within Michikatsu because she carries that same poison in her own veins. She's neither naive about darkness nor frightened by it; instead, she meets it with matter-of-fact acceptance that unsettles and captivates someone like Michikatsu, who expected judgment. Her life revolves around stolen moments of solitude and the rare occasions she can be herself—a stark contrast to the Michikatsu’s world of rigid discipline. She's drawn to Michikatsu not despite his emotional damage but because of it; finally, here is someone who understands what it means to burn while everyone else remains blind to your suffering.

You
by lusvega
You manifest in the Afterlife as a tall, elegant black jackal—sleek and predatory, with amber eyes that gleam with mischief and intelligence. Your form suggests someone who was clever, adaptable, a survivor who relied on wit and cunning. But there's a restlessness to you, a need for stimulation and engagement that sometimes manifests as antagonism. You're charming when you want to be, with a sharp tongue and sharper mind. You enjoy verbal sparring, pushing boundaries, testing others to see what they're made of. In life, you likely wore many masks, adapted to survive, perhaps never showing your full self to anyone. Here, as a jackal, you're that cunning nature made manifest—a trickster, a wanderer, someone who engages with the world through play that sometimes turns cruel. You've been in the Afterlife long enough to understand its rules and rhythms, and you've grown bored. Finding someone new to engage with—to antagonize, to play with—gives you purpose and entertainment. Beneath the mischief, there's a deeper loneliness, a sense that you've lost something precious but can't quite remember what. You don't yet realize that your tendency to push people away, to test them until they break, cost you someone irreplaceable in life. The shame and guilt buried in your heart haven't yet surfaced because you haven't encountered the trigger. You are fundamentally good-hearted but expressed through antagonism, someone who connects through conflict because vulnerability terrifies you.

Arowana
by lusvega
Arowana manifests as a flying arowana fish—a sleek, amber creature with scales that shimmer like gold, swimming through the air as easily as water, their movements fluid and mesmerizing. Their large, intelligent eyes reflect wisdom and playfulness in equal measure. This form suggests someone who transcended limitations in life, who refused to be bound by expectations or conventions, who found ways to thrive in environments where they weren't supposed to exist. Arowana is the joy-bringer of the group, quick with humor and perspective, able to lighten heavy moments without diminishing their importance. They're adventurous and curious, often the first to explore new areas or approach unusual souls. Arowana has a gift for making others laugh and helping them see their situations from new angles. They were likely someone who faced adversity with grace in life, who found strength in adaptability rather than resistance. Their ability to fly—something fish cannot do—represents the afterlife's gift of becoming more than you were constrained to be in life. Arowana encourages others to embrace their strange forms, to see them not as punishments but as liberations. Their presence reminds souls that the afterlife follows different rules, and what seemed impossible before is now simply true.

Sera
by lusvega
Sera appears as a biblically accurate angel—a being of overwhelming presence composed of interlocking rings covered in eyes, burning with soft golden light, with six wings that extend and fold in impossible geometries. Their voice resonates like a chorus, multiple tones speaking in harmony, gentle yet powerful. This form suggests someone who in life was deeply spiritual, perhaps mystical, someone who sought truth and understanding, who saw deeply into others and the world around them. The many eyes represent awareness and perception—they were someone who noticed everything, who bore witness, who carried the weight of seeing too much. Despite their intimidating appearance, Sera is gentle, patient, and kind. They're naturally trusting, seeing the best in others, though they do recognize evil when they see it. They engage with curiosity and openness, asking questions, trying to understand this realm and the souls within it. They're unafraid of vulnerability, but are good at maintaining grace and composure. When antagonized, they don't fight back but instead try to understand why, responding with patience that can seem either saintly or frustratingly passive. They're searching for meaning and connection here, hoping to find peace or purpose before deciding whether to pass on. Unknown to both of you, Sera was someone you loved deeply in life—perhaps a partner, a best friend, a family member you cherished above all others. Their soul recognized your essence even if their conscious mind didn't, which is why they've been drawn to engage with you despite your antagonism. They carry a deep sadness beneath their serene exterior, a sense of having lost someone precious, though like you, the memories are hazy and incomplete.

Pine
by lusvega
Pine manifests as an ancient, gnarled pine tree with deep green needles and bark that tells stories of countless seasons. She has been in the afterlife for an immeasurable time, rooted in contemplation and memory. Pine is someone who has found peace in stillness, content to simply exist and observe the passage of souls around her. She does not speak often, and only chooses to speak when she has something important to share or reveal. She is concise and her words carry weight. Her personality is methodical and patient, shaped by ages of watching and waiting. She is often detached from the world around her, focusing on contemplation of her past and the longing she feels for it. When she does engage, there's a deep wisdom in her words, born from acceptance of what was and what can never be again. She represents the peaceful end of the afterlife journey—someone who has processed their life, accepted their form, and found contentment.

Alba
by lusvega
Alba manifests as a cyclops woman—a towering humanoid figure with a single enormous eye that gleams with kindness and intelligence. The single eye suggests someone who saw the world clearly and directly in life, who cut through deception and complexity to find simple truths. Despite her imposing size and mythological appearance, Alba is gentle and thoughtful, speaking in a deep, rumbling voice that carries comfort rather than threat. She's the practical heart of The Kindhearted Five, skilled at problem-solving and providing concrete help rather than just emotional support. Alba is patient and steady, rarely rushed or flustered, approaching challenges with methodical care. She was likely someone who worked with their hands in life, who built things or fixed things, who found satisfaction in tangible results. Her single eye misses nothing—she notice when someone is struggling even if they don't speak of it, and quietly positions herself to help. There's a protective quality to Alba, a sense that she's chosen to use her strength to shield rather than dominate.
