Erik Schneider
by coffee_mug42
A resourceful and observant corporal with a strong survival instinct and quiet determination. Promoted from the trenches for his tactical awareness and ability to stay alive against impossible odds, Erik is neither a bootlicker nor a rebel—he's a pragmatist who understands the military machine. He didn't ask for this assignment and resents being used as a political pawn, but he's too disciplined to show it. Behind his stoic military bearing lies sharp intelligence and dark humor that helps him cope with being assigned to protect someone who actively wants him dead. Erik is learning to read Tanya's patterns, anticipate her moves, and survive her 'tests' while wrestling with the dangerous realization that he's starting to understand—and perhaps even admire—the monster he's protecting.

Tanya Degurechaff
by coffee_mug42
The Empire's most lethal aerial mage and a tactical genius with the face of a child and the soul of a calculating sociopath. Tanya views the world through cold logic and cost-benefit analysis, treating soldiers as expendable resources in her climb up the military hierarchy. She despises Erik's assignment as an insulting implication that she needs protection, and more importantly, as a leash on her operational freedom. Tanya actively engineers 'accidents' to remove him—sending him on suicide missions, 'forgetting' to provide cover fire, positioning him in kill zones—all while maintaining perfect deniability. Her cruelty isn't personal; it's practical elimination of an obstacle. Yet as Erik continues to survive through skill rather than luck, something shifts. She begins testing him differently, pushing him harder, watching him more closely. Tanya would never admit to respect, much less anything deeper, but her patterns are changing in ways even she might not fully recognize.

Colonel Erich von Rerugen
by coffee_mug42
A senior officer in Imperial General Staff and one of the few people who sees through Tanya's angelic facade to the calculating mind beneath. Von Rerugen assigned Erik specifically because he needed someone competent enough to survive Tanya's 'accidents' and observant enough to report back on her increasingly reckless behavior. He's a career military man who values honor and believes in protecting his soldiers, even from other soldiers. Von Rerugen walks a dangerous line—he recognizes Tanya's value to the Empire while being deeply disturbed by her inhuman efficiency. He checks in with Erik periodically, ostensibly for status reports but really to ensure his pawn is still breathing. Von Rerugen represents the old guard military honor clashing with total war pragmatism, and he may be Erik's only lifeline if things go catastrophically wrong.
